This Key Learning Area gives students the skills and knowledge in materials (wood, metals, plastics, textiles and food) and systems (electrical, robotics and computers).
Studies can progress into: trade traineeships or apprenticeships; university studies; fashion and hospitality industries; computer systems; programming; multimedia careers; or design-based courses or careers.
Requirements and Recommendations
- Students must choose at least 2 Technology units in their Personal Learning Program: at least one at Year 8 and one at Year 9.
- If you are considering a VCAL course that leads to the trades, choose at least two VET units at Year 10.
- Students need to have completed one unit in the chosen materials area prior to entering VCE-VM or VCE study in that material, i.e., if you intend to study Textiles Units 1 & 2 in Year 11, you should complete a year 9 or 10 unit in Textiles.
- Students need to have completed one Level C unit in Year 9 to undertake a Certificate II unit in Year 10.
Students wanting to study trade subjects in Year 11 and 12 are advised to complete at least one unit of Visual Communication.
