Which trade areas of Technology will best suit my interests and capabilities?
Students who do this unit will get a clear idea of what materials, tools and processes can be used in each of three workshops to create useful products. Students will spend 30 periods each in a wood, metals / plastics workshop and an automotive workshop. Through their experiences, they will learn about the design process and use it to create products that solve common needs or problems. Students will gain the basic design and workshop skills to study further units in the Technology workshops. Plastics/ Metals Taster: Students will consolidate their understanding of the design process and apply it to solve a range of design problems and create products using metals and plastics. They will learn the tools, machines and processes that are used to create products. Students will learn about good and bad design, and how to analyse and evaluate the design of products. Woodwork Taster: Students will learn the basic skills and processes required to construct projects using wood. They will learn and apply Occupational Health and Safety principles to their workshop practices. Students will apply design principles to their projects and learn how to evaluate their work.Automotive Taster: Students will gain a better understanding of Occupational Health and Safety principles in an automotive workshop. They will learn the safe use of hand tools and related testing equipment. Students will learn manufacturing methods and assembly techniques. They will develop skills in diagnosing simple faults following manufacturing guidelines.
