The study of English is central to the learning and development of all young Australians. It helps create confident communicators, imaginative thinkers and informed citizens. It is through the study of English that individuals learn to analyse, understand, communicate with and build relationships with others and with the world around them. The study of English helps young people develop the knowledge and skills needed for education, training and the workplace. It helps them become ethical, thoughtful, informed and active members of society. In this light English is a compulsory study from years 7 to 12.
In Year 8 (level B) all students will study English with the same teacher for the entire year. This will be a continuation from what happens in year 7. This means that they will not have to choose their English option from the vertical curriculum offerings in year 8.
In Year 9 (level C) English will be offered as a core unit. In Year 10 (level D), students will be able to select their English level based on their teachers recomendation.
In Year 11 students must study 11 VCE English and either 12 VCE English or 12 VCE Literature in Year 12. VCE Literature may also be included in the students program in addition to VCE English as one of the optional VCE units.
The English curriculum studied in each year level will follow the Victorian Curriculum and focus on Listening, Speaking, Reading, Viewing and Writing with the emphasis being on Language, Literature and Literacy. All English units will have a strong ICT component.
