As Mathematics is a sequential study, it is recommended that units are completed in the order given at all levels. Despite this, the vertical curriculum allows a sequential program to be tailored for each student.
The following flowchart illustrates some of the possible pathways in Mathematics for students beyond Year 7. It should be read in conjunction with the unit outlines that follow.
Students can be accelerated to consolidate their study in a variety of ways depending on their ability. In all cases, acceptance into an accelerated unit is dependent on the recommendation of the Mathematics teacher.
There are many combinations of Mathematics units possible at VCE. The main thing to keep in mind in preparing for VCE / VCE-VM Mathematics is that students should take the highest level of maths of which they are capable. This will be particularly important when choosing units for the second semester of Year 10. Advice from course and Careers counsellors will be vital at this point.
Students considering the Year 11 and 12 Trade program need to also be aware that some TAFE modules (e.g. engineering) require a sound maths background - at least to Standard Year 10 level.
