Successful completion of any Year 9 Science unit.

This will prepare students wishing to complete VCE Biology, Chemistry or Physics and is highly recommended for those considering any of these subject.

There will be one Cycle (6 weeks) of each of the components Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

Biology
Why are we different? DNA: Where have we come from? Evolution: How did we get here? Inheritance.
Students will learn about the diversity of animals and plants as a result of evolution; how natural selection influences populations and creates new species. The structure and components of the DNA double helix; how DNA can be used to create protein and how our understanding of DNA and cells has led to the development of biotechnologies. The relationship of DNA, genes and chromosomes; the role of genes in determining patterns of inheritance and how to predict genetic outcomes in offspring.
Chemistry
What are reactions and how do they work? What are the different types of reactions? Why is the periodic table set up the way it is? How do we form different types of compounds?
Students explain how similarities in the chemical behaviour of elements and their compounds and their atomic structures are represented in the way the periodic table has been constructed. They compare the properties of a range of elements representative of the major groups and periods in the periodic table. They use atomic symbols and balanced chemical equations to summarise chemical reactions, including neutralisation and combustion.
Physics
Why can planes fly? How do we calculate speed? How is velocity different from speed? What are Newtons laws of motion? Why can magnets make objects spin rapidly?
Students will investigate the key components of aircraft motion, including: Where an object is? How fast is it going? How quickly its speed is changing? Students will apply their knowledge of position, velocity and acceleration to investigate Newton’s 3 laws of motion. Students will investigate how magnets can be used to create electric motors.
