The fight for rights
HUMS
10
This unit is designed to prepare students for VCE units 1-4 in History
What rights are important to fight for? What is the Universal Declaration of Human Rights? How have Indigenous Australians fought for rights and freedoms in Australia from the Day of Mourning to the Apology to the Stolen Generations? How has the environmental movement in Australia fought to protect and preserve Australia’s beautiful landscapes?
Take to the streets and the barricades as you learn about how Australians both Indigenous and non-Indigenous have fought for decades to gain the rights and freedoms that are guaranteed to everyone under the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights. We will study how Indigenous Australians used a number of strategies to win rights and freedoms for themselves from protesting against celebrations of the invasion of Australia in 1938, organising the famous Freedom rides of 1965 and lobbying the government to hold the important 1967 referendum where they were finally included as citizens of this country in the census. We also study the impact of the environmental movement as they worked to protect Australia’s environmental treasures from destruction by the logging and mining industries. We will take you inside famous environmental protest actions such as the battle to prevent the construction of the Franklin Dam in Tasmania and the fight against the coal industry’s pollution of the Great Barrier Reef. You will learn why the environment became such an important focus for many Australians after World War Two.
