Yr 10 English: Advanced

How do the texts we read challenge our views, values and understanding of the world in which we live? How do writers use the characters, themes and critical scenes in their stories to engage readers? What are some literary features of a text and how are they used to create meaning? How do writers position readers to embrace and support their arguments? Students explore a variety of text types through discussion, developing and supporting interpretations, writing analytical and creative responses and delivering oral presentations. In effect, this unit mirrors many features of VCE Units 1 & 2 English and some elements of the English Literature Units 1 & 2 to help students maximise their learning opportunities and �get a head start� in their VCE studies.

In Year 10 Advanced English, students explore how meaning is created in texts. They identify, discuss and analyse how authors use language and other devices to create characters, settings and events, they explore themes and build the world of the text in the reader�s mind. Students also consider the similarities and differences between how themes, ideas and issues are presented in texts. When developing creative responses to texts, students explore how purpose and audience affect the choices they make as writers in developing ideas and planning work, making choices about structure, conventions and language to develop voice and style. Students also explore how language is used in opinion pieces for persuasive effect and examine the structure and presentation of argument. They consider different types of persuasive language, including written, spoken, and visual, they consider the contention of texts and examine how logic and reasoning, tone and bias are used to develop and strengthen argument.
