Unit Outline

Why do we wear different clothing for different occasions, and what skills and techniques do we need to enable construction?

Full Description

Students will be taught about the planning and design skills required to make clothing relevant to a specific occasion. Appropriate construction techniques for cutting, pinning, joining, overlocking, neatening and fittingof individual garments will be explored. Students will be taught how to complete a detailed self-evaluation. The focus of this unit is for students to be able to make suitable choices of fabrics and commercial patterns to construct articles of clothing in accordance with a specified design brief. The emphasis will be on fashion design, use of materials and the use of suitable construction techniques and processes in a safe and appropriate manner. Students will be required to critically evaluate their finished products in accordance with their design brief.

Note: This unit will prepare students for VCE Design and Technology or can be used as a general interest or vocational subject. Students are required to purchase their own fabric, threads, pattern and notions for each unit of work. The teacher will instruct the student when to purchase the fabric. Each student is required to have their own equipment in a secure bag or container.
