Unit Outline

Year 10 Ceramics and Sculpture is designed for students who enjoy designing, building and experimenting with 3D artforms in preparation for VCE Art Making and Exhibiting. Explore functional and expressive three dimensional forms, expand your glaze techniques and create soft sculptures while developing your own creative style and ideas. Throughout the semester you will create ambitious artworks, refine your techniques and work like a practising artist. Students will also present a short critique of their strongest artwork and exhibit selected works in the annual end of year art exhibition.

Full Description

Year 10 Ceramics and Sculpture builds on the skills developed in Year 9 and prepares students for VCE Art Making and Exhibiting through more advanced ceramics and 3D artmaking processes. Throughout the semester you will refine your ceramic handbuilding skills using slab, coil and pinch techniques to create a range of functional and expressive ceramic forms. You will explore different clay bodies and learn how artists select specific clay types to achieve different aesthetic and structural results. Students will experimenting with glazing, surface decoration and finishing techniques. In sculpture students will explore soft sculpture and experiment with materials, textures and construction methods to create imaginative three dimensional artworks. Throughout the semester, you will investigate a range of artistic styles, themes and contemporary artists to help develop your own personal style and creative direction. Students will plan, develop and document ideas in a visual arts journal, using drawing and annotations to explore materials, techniques and processes like a practising artist. At the end of the semester, students will present a short critique of their strongest artwork and exhibit selected works in the annual end of year art exhibition.
